Retired Rear Admiral Ndubisi Kanu, ex-military governor of Imo State and chieftain of the pro-democracy organization — the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, is dead.
Aged 78, Kanu died in the early hours of Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at an undisclosed hospital during a brief illness, a family source said.
“I can tell you he passed on this morning. He was 78. We celebrated his last birthday in November 2020. I don’t have much details. I am still in the village,” said Kanu, a relation, Ireke Kanu confirmed.
Persecondnews recalls that the late Kanu was in 1975 appointed into the Supreme Military Council (SMC), the highest ruling organ in the country then.
He was a Biafran soldier and fought in the Nigerian civil war but was reabsorbed into the Nigerian military at the end of the war in 1970.
A political activist to the core, Kanu also fought for the revalidation of the late Chief MKO Abiola’s annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.
As the Chairman of NADECO’s Action Committee, he was in charge of nationwide mobilization of people for protests.
