Electrocution at Lagos Prison: 5 fatalities recorded, several injured

Early Monday morning  tragedy hit Ikoyi Correctional Centre, Lagos, as no fewer than five inmates were electrocuted and 10 others injured.

The disaster was caused by a loose electric cable in the federal government’s facility.
The injured are receiving treatment at a hospital, a source said.

The spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Lagos State, Mr Rotimi Oladokun, confirmed the incident.
He said the Comptroller General of the NCoS, Mr Jaffaru Ahmed, will brief the media later in the day on the incident.

Also, the Minister for Interiror, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, confirmed the disaster through a statement by his spokesperson, Jane Osuji.

“The attention of the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has been drawn to an electrocution incident at the Ikoyi Medium Security Prison in Lagos.

”The minister has directed a quick investigation into the root cause and the ministry will in the next few hours share a comprehensive update on the incident.

“While we commiserate with victims of the incident, the minister has ordered immediate medical attention for those affected,” the statement said.
