Mother of 5 dumps day-old baby in septic tank in Ogun, nabbed by police

A 30-year old mother of five, Risikatu Olabintan who dumped her day-old baby in a septic tank, has been nabbed by the police in  Ogun State.

Risikat, who gave birth secretly to the baby, threw the baby boy in the “death pit” at about 5.00am on November 17
She committed the crime at Ishaga Surulere in Owode-Yewa on ldiroko-Ota road.
“I threw him into the pit because l have no means of taking care of him,” she said.
A distress call received by members of Ibukun Oluwapo Community Ishaga Surulere area in Owode-Yewa that some children while playing at the backyard of their compound heard the crying of a baby in the pit and raised alarm.
”On receiving the information, the DPO Owode-Yewa, SP Olabisi Elebute quickly led team of policemen to the scene where the baby was rescued with the assistance of members of the public.
“Investigation later revealed that it was the said Risikat Olabintan who gave birth secretly to the baby and threw him inside the soak-away as early as 5am of November 17, hence she was apprehended.
”She made a confessional statement that she actually gave birth to the baby which is the sixth of her children and that she has no means of feeding them all since her husband has absconded to an unknown destination for quite some time now,” the State command spokesman, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi,  said.
“Both the baby and the mother are presently in the hospital for medical attention and the baby is responding positively to treatment”.
The newly-posted Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohimi Edgal, has ordered that the case should be transferred to Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Investigation and Intelligence Department for proper investigation.
