A former Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba bemoans partisan divide in the Nigerian congress, blaming the dysfunction on a combination of issues.
In an interview with the Punch newspapers, he lamented the hyper-partisanship that has almost paralyzed the relationship between the executive and the National Assembly.
” I am of the view that the relationship should be improved upon in the next assembly. That synergy is not just crucial but it is critical even though they are different arms of government. They need to work in harmony for the general good of Nigeria and it is something that we are hoping that we would rebuild, he said.
Ndoma-Egba who served three terms in the Senate from 2003 to 2015, said ” one would like to see greater synergy with the executive without, at the same time, compromising the powers of the legislature to overseeing (the activities of) the executive. One would also want to see some urgency in their approach to legislative responsibilities.
