Stakeholders gathered for the 60th anniversary of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), on Thursday in Abuja where they reaffirmed the importance of sports as both a unifying force and a tool for youth development in the country.

During the event, which convened top sports industry figures, leaders emphasized that sports drive unity, discipline, and economic growth.

National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko specifically addressed journalists, calling on them to uphold accuracy and professionalism in their reporting.

“We need to ensure that our reporting does not damage the credibility of sports journalism and impede sectoral growth,”he said, addressing recent media reports alleging irregularities in a sports facility built under FIFA’s development programme.

Dikko clarified that there was no corruption in the project and that FIFA had raised no concerns about its execution.

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, underscored sports as a springboard for economic growth, revealing that the sector contributes approximately ₦38 billion to the nation’s economy through broadcasting, advertising, and related industries.

Mrs. Ekaette Unuoma Akpabio, the wife of the Senate President, represented by Maltilda Sampson emphasized that sports nurture character, confidence, and resilience, helping young people to thrive beyond the field.

“When Nigerian girls rise, Nigeria rises again,”she declared, drawing applause from participants.

Mrs. Akpabio lamented the lack of access to sports facilities and support for many Nigerian girls, urging journalists to spotlight the stories of women athletes.

She challenged corporate organizations to invest in female sports development, describing such investment as “fuel for national progress, not mere recreation.”

The SWAN anniversary event served as a rallying point for stakeholders who agreed that sports, when properly harnessed, can unite Nigeria, empower its youth, and strengthen its economy.

The stakeholders’ call to action emphasizes the need for greater investment and support for sports development in Nigeria.

By harnessing the power of sports, the country can unlock new opportunities for economic growth, youth empowerment, and national unity.
