Colleagues of the late Nollywood actor, Segun Remi, widely known as Chief Kanran, have expressed deep sorrow over his death, calling it a painful loss for the Nigerian film industry.

The veteran passed away early Friday morning, just three weeks before his 70th birthday. Friends and colleagues say the timing has intensified the grief within the Yoruba film community

Remi, fondly addressed by his stage name Chief Kanran, built a reputation for disciplined performances and a voice that filled both stage and screen.

Over the decades, he became a reference point for younger actors seeking craft over hype.

Yemi Solade hailed him as “a standard-bearer for professionalism,” adding: “Chief Kanran reminded us that the work comes first. Even when it wasn’t fashionable, he kept the bar high and defended the dignity of the craft.”

Actress Jaye Kuti recalled his quiet mentorship on and off set.

“He corrected without shaming. He listened when many were too busy to care. That generosity shaped my early years in the industry,” she said.

TAMPAN President, Bolaji Amusan, described Remi as “a cultural pillar whose name is woven into the history of Yoruba cinema,” noting that the association will support the family as plans for his rites progress.

Veteran actor Jide Kosoko said Remi’s death is a reminder that the legacies of aging greats must be preserved.

“He was firm, disciplined, and committed. We must document and celebrate men like Chief Kanran while they are here.”

Saheed Balogun remembered him as courageous and truthful.

“He could be blunt because he believed the truth protects the work. He stood for integrity, and we will miss that backbone,” he said.

Visibly moved, Yinka Quadri spoke of conversations that often stretched long after shoots.

“He carried Yoruba history in his chest. Every chat left you richer. This is a personal loss,” Quadri said.

Family sources said he died peacefully after a brief illness.

Arrangements are now being made for a funeral that will honour his career and contributions to the arts.
