South Africa’s Amajita Stun Flying Eagles, Book Spot in AFCON U-20 Final

"The decisive moment came when substitute goalkeeper Ajia Yakub miscalculated a pull-out, allowing South African defender Tylon Smith to head the ball into the net"

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria failed to reach the final of the 18th Africa U20 Cup of Nations after losing to South Africa’s Amajita by a single goal.

The decisive moment came when substitute goalkeeper Ajia Yakub miscalculated a pull-out, allowing South African defender Tylon Smith to head the ball into the net.

Despite starting strong with intensity and muscle-flexing, the Flying Eagles struggled with coordination and composure in the final third, wasting several opportunities.

Forward Kparobo Arierhi had notable chances, including a header from a teasing cross by Clinton Jephta in the 22nd minute and a shot from six yards out with only the goalkeeper to beat on the half-hour.

However, he couldn’t capitalize on these opportunities.

The injury to goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt on the hour mark proved costly, as his replacement, Ajia Yakub, made a critical error that led to the only goal of the match.

Despite opportunities for substitutes Mendos Rickson and Auwal Ibrahim, the Flying Eagles couldn’t find parity.

“We will go for the maximum points,” Head Coach Aliyu Zubairu had previously said, noting his team’s determination. However, this match saw the team fall short of expectations.

The Flying Eagles will now play the loser of the second semi-final between hosts Egypt and Morocco for the bronze medals on Sunday.
