The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) has expressed profound grief following the death of its former President and The Eagle Online publisher, Dotun Oladipo, who died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.
In a statement released Wednesday by Publicity Secretary Kemi Yesufu, GOCOP remembered Oladipo as a trailblazer whose vision and leadership were instrumental in shaping the organisation during its formative years.
Oladipo led GOCOP as President from 2017 to 2021, steering the association through a pivotal era of rapid expansion for Nigeria’s digital media landscape while advocating for higher professional standards and industry coordination.
The guild highlighted that Oladipo successfully bridged the gap between legacy media and digital publishing, channeling his extensive background as a veteran journalist and editor into his role as a pioneering digital publisher.
The statement noted that he was among the early advocates of greater collaboration among online publishers, recognising the importance of creating a professional platform where publishers could exchange ideas, address industry challenges and strengthen the credibility of digital journalism.
During his four-year tenure as GOCOP president, Oladipo represented the guild at various engagements and participated actively in efforts to advance the interests of online publishers at a time when the sector was undergoing significant transformation.
Reacting to his death, GOCOP President, Danlami Nmodu, described the development as a painful loss to the guild and the wider media community.
Nmodu said Oladipo played a significant role in building GOCOP and helping to establish online publishers as an important component of Nigeria’s media landscape.
“Dotun played an important role in the development of GOCOP. He led the Guild for four years at a time when there was still a lot of work to be done to establish online publishers as an important part of the media. His contribution will always be remembered,” Nmodu said.
He further described Oladipo as a journalist who understood both the editorial and commercial sides of the media business, adding that his commitment to the development of online journalism was evident in his contributions to the guild.
“Dotun understood journalism and he understood the business of publishing. He was passionate about the place of online media in Nigeria and he gave his time to the growth of the Guild. We are saddened by his passing,” he said.
Oladipo was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, the parent company of The Eagle Online.
His death was announced by The Eagle Online in the early hours of Wednesday.
The publication described his passing as a shock, stating that he had reportedly been in his usual state of health earlier in the day before he suddenly took ill at his office.
Before venturing fully into online publishing, Oladipo built an extensive career in Nigeria’s mainstream newspaper industry.
He served as Politics Editor of PUNCH Newspapers and was also a member of the newspaper’s Editorial Board. He subsequently worked with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun before establishing The Eagle Online.
Oladipo’s academic background was in mass communication. He obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992.
GOCOP extended its condolences to Oladipo’s family, the management and staff of The Eagle Online, as well as his friends, colleagues and associates across the media industry.
The guild said it would collaborate with his family and associates on arrangements to honour his memory and recognise his contributions to journalism and online publishing in Nigeria.
