Bail Row: Ex-AGF Malami Alleges EFCC Obstructing Release

678

Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Chika Malami, who is currently detained, has leveled accusations against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Malami claims the EFCC is obstructing his ability to meet his bail conditions, which he describes as stringent and difficult to fulfill.

His media aide, Muhammed Bello Doka, refuted the commission’s assertion on Sunday.

Doka stated that the EFCC’s claim—that Malami remains in custody because he has not met the prescribed bail requirements—is inaccurate.

Furthermore, Doka suggested the conditions are a deliberate strategy to prolong his detention, specifically citing the impracticality of requiring federal permanent secretaries under government investigation to serve as sureties.

“Such conditions are intentionally used by EFCC to prolong his detention at the same time saying he refused bail. From the onset, Malami was ready to comply with the bail, but the commission denied him the opportunity to do so,” he stated.

Regarding accusations that the former minister was attempting to evade judicial proceedings, Malami’s representative insisted his principal is a law-abiding individual who has not made any effort to avoid investigations.

He clarified that the suggestion of evasion was a statement that emanated from the commission, not Malami.

The representative called on the EFCC to be fair and comprehensive in its approach, demanding that it present reasonable and achievable bail conditions.

Furthermore, he implored the commission to cease using media channels to falsely report that Malami has declined bail.
