Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with Cyprus have entered a new chapter, with both countries expressing readiness to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, education and political dialogue following the accreditation of Nigeria’s ambassador to the Mediterranean island nation.

The commitment was reaffirmed on Friday when Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Nigeria to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, presented her Letters of Credence to the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.

The ceremony, which marked the commencement of Ufochukwu’s tour of duty as Nigeria’s principal to Cyprus, was conducted alongside the diplomatic tradition.

The Nigerian ambassador relayed the message of President Bola Tinubu to his Cypriot counterpart and expressed her commitment to strengthening relations between both countries during her assignment.

In his remarks, Christodoulides welcomed Ufochukwu and reaffirmed the deep and enduring friendship between Cyprus and Nigeria.

He described their relationship as one rooted in shared historical experiences, common principles and enduring links between their peoples.

Christodoulides identified the economy, trade, investment, education and political dialogue as key areas for expanded cooperation, alongside efforts to address common challenges through bilateral and multilateral engagement.

The development underscores Cyprus’s readiness to deepen engagement with Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, as both countries seek to expand partnerships beyond traditional diplomacy.

The Cypriot president commended Nigeria’s significant role in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly its contributions to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.

He pledged the Nigerian envoy that the government of Cyprus was ready to work closely with Nigeria to advance bilateral relations in areas of mutual interest.

For Nigeria, Ufochukwu’s appointment signals a renewed commitment to strengthening the country’s diplomatic presence in Europe and the Mediterranean region, particularly in economic cooperation, education and diaspora welfare.

“The renewed engagement is expected to open new opportunities for Nigerian businesses, students and professionals in Cyprus while creating a platform for increased Cypriot investment in Nigeria.”

The presentation of the Letters of Credence formally accredits Ufochukwu to perform representational duties on behalf of Nigeria and serve as the official channel of communication between Abuja and Nicosia.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials of the Cypriot government and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.

Ufochukwu is expected to begin engagements with Cypriot government officials, business leaders and the Nigerian community in Cyprus as part of efforts to translate the renewed goodwill into concrete outcomes for both countries.
