Vice President Kashim Shettima rallied Nigerians in New York ahead of President Tinubu’s address at the 81st UN General Assembly, urging the diaspora to drive home-country development by investing capital and sharing technical expertise.
The talks, held on the sidelines of the gathering, centred on diaspora roles in growth, capital inflows, skills transfer and how citizens overseas can advance Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic goals.
Later on Thursday, Shettima is billed to deliver President Bola Tinubu’s national statement at the General Debate, setting out Nigeria’s stance on global questions and the government’s push for reform, development, peace and cooperation.
Four governors sat with him: Babagana Zulum of Borno, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara as well as Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.
Spouses of the governors of Kwara, Katsina, Abia and Osun States were also present at the engagement.
Cabinet members on hand included Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Innovation, Science and Technology Minister Dr Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction Minister Dr Bernard Doro.
Also present were Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa, Solid Minerals Development Minister Dr Dele Alake, Women Affairs Minister Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite.
Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, joined the session, along with Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim.
Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Amb. Lateef Kayode Are, heads of government agencies and senior officials from Nigeria’s missions across the United States made the list.
