Sixteen-year-old Queen Joseph’s hat-trick has inspired Nigeria’s Flamingos to a thrilling 5-3 victory over Benin Republic, sealing an 8-5 aggregate win and qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Akeem Busari-coached side completed the task at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé, Togo, after needing a 75th-minute winner to edge the first leg 3-2 at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State.

Benin showed resilience across both ties, but Nigeria’s attacking quality ultimately proved decisive despite defensive lapses.

Mary Akpan Dustan gave the Flamingos a sixth-minute lead, only for Romaine Gandonou to equalise three minutes later.

Esther Stephen and Joseph then struck before the interval to send Nigeria into the break 3-1 ahead.

Joseph, who had opened the scoring in the first half, added a penalty ten minutes into the second period to extend the advantage to 4-1.

Benin fought back through goals from Hermionne Lokossou and a second from Gandonou, setting up a tense closing stage.

The Fosla Academy striker completed her hat-trick to restore a two-goal cushion and confirm the 5-3 win on the day.

Her clinical finishing proved the difference as Nigeria overcame another Benin resurgence.

Despite conceding three goals, the Flamingos’ offensive firepower overwhelmed their opponents.

Joseph also equalled a notable record by scoring in every match during the qualifying campaign.

Persecondnews reports that this victory secures Nigeria one of Africa’s five slots at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted in Morocco from October 17 to November 7.

Making their ninth appearance on the global stage, the Flamingos boast an impressive track record, having qualified for every single edition of the tournament and capturing the bronze medal in 2022.
