Egypt ended 92 years of World Cup frustration on Monday, defeating New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver to head Group G and book a historic Round of 32 place.

The contest began with New Zealand applying early pressure and stunning Egypt in the first half as they chased a famous result of their own.

Egypt regrouped during the interval and emerged far more purposeful after the break.

Their renewed attacking threat quickly told. Ziko, captain Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet all scored in a dominant second-half display that completely turned the match around.

The three goals also marked the first time Egypt have scored that many in a single World Cup fixture.

The victory carries major historical weight.

Before Monday, Egypt had gone winless in all four of their previous World Cup appearances, dating back to their debut in 1934.

They came agonisingly close to ending that drought in their Group G opener, only for an own goal to rescue Belgium in a 1-1 draw.

Four points from two matches have now lifted Egypt to the summit of Group G. Under the expanded 2026 format, that position already guarantees progression to the knockout phase.

Scenes of delight swept through the Egyptian camp in Vancouver and among fans celebrating in Cairo once the final whistle confirmed the landmark win.

With seven Africa Cup of Nations titles already secured, Egypt have shown they can take the next step and compete at the highest global level.

The Pharaohs will seek to strengthen their standing when they face Iran in their final Group G fixture on Saturday.
