Nigeria’s pursuit of a spot at the FIFA World Cup 2026 ended in penalty shootout heartbreak against DR Congo in Rabat, Morocco.

The decisive shootout followed a tense 1-1 draw after extra time.

The defeat marks a significant low point for Nigerian football, as the Super Eagles have now failed to qualify for consecutive World Cups—a streak dating back to their first qualification in 1994.

Nigeria had a promising start, taking the lead through Frank Onyeka’s deflected strike in the 3rd minute.

However, DR Congo equalized in the 32nd minute through Meschack Elia’s goal, setting the stage for a tense finish.

Despite dominating possession in extra time, Nigeria couldn’t find the breakthrough, and the match headed to penalties.

In the shootout, DR Congo emerged victorious, winning 4-3.

This heartbreaking loss is Nigeria’s first failure to qualify for consecutive World Cups since 1994, leaving fans and players stunned.

Nigeria’s path to the World Cup was always challenging, and their 4-1 win over Gabon in the semi-finals had raised hopes.

However, DR Congo’s resilience and clinical finishing in the shootout proved too much for the Super Eagles.
