CAF Expands Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to 16 Teams

MThe Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant expansion of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), increasing the number of participating teams from 12 to 16, starting with the 2026 edition in Morocco.

CAF disclosed the latest developments in a statement on its official website on Wednesday, stating: “As the qualification phase for the 2026 edition has already been completed, the Executive Committee has approved the selection mechanism to determine the four additional teams.”

They will join 12 already qualified nations, including Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, Tanzania, and Zambia. Morocco, as the host nation, completes the 16-team lineup.

“Based on the current FIFA Women’s World Rankings, the top four teams from those eliminated in the final qualifying round have been selected to complete the list of participants,” CAF explained.

It stated its strategic approach to promoting competitiveness and inclusivity.

This expansion aligns with CAF’s vision to strengthen women’s football development and global visibility, providing more African nations with opportunities to showcase their talent and gain tournament experience.
