Nigerian champions Remo Stars suffered a crippling defeat at home on Sunday, falling 5-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in the CAF Champions League Second Preliminary Round.
Persecondnews reports that the match, played at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, was characterized by total domination from the visitors.
Mamelodi Sundowns, who boast several players from the formidable South African national team, Bafana Bafana, asserted control early.
Tashreeq Matthews broke the deadlock just 12 minutes in, and Peter Shalulile ensured a comfortable lead by scoring the second goal three minutes before the end of the first half (2-0).
The second half brought no relief for Remo Stars.
Sundowns maintained their relentless pace, with Miguel Reisinho extending the lead to 3-0 in the 61st minute.
Substitute Arthur Sales made it 4-0 in the 75th minute. While Samson Olasupo briefly cut the deficit to 4-1 with a consolation goal two minutes later, it was insufficient to spark a comeback.
Substitute Katlego Ntsabeleng sealed the 5-1 humiliation with five minutes remaining, effectively turning the second leg in South Africa into a simple procedure for Sundowns
Persecondnews recalls that the likes of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and midfielder Teboho Mokoena, both started the Bafana Bafana game against the Super Eagles that ended 1-1 during the World Cup qualifiers.
