Bayelsa Gov. Douye Diri has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), according to a post on Facebook by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah.
Alabrah said the governor resigned from the PDP with the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Abraham Ingobere, along with all the PDP members in the state legislature.
Diri’s resignation brings to an end months of speculation over his alleged moves to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), but Alabrah did not indicate the party he will join.
Persecondnews reports that the governor made the announcement on Wednesday during the weekly State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Yenagoa.
The governor had reportedly submitted his resignation letter to the party, and the entire State Executive Council had followed suit.
Contacted on telephone, Alabrah said:“I cannot talk now.”
Persecondnews reported that Enugu Gov. Peter Mbah had on Tuesday, October 14, defected to the APC from PDP.
His defection has ended the PDP’s 25-year grip on the state and is seen as a significant shift in the political landscape of Enugu State and potentially, the Southeast region.
