President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Brasília, Brazil, for a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
After a brief stopover in Los Angeles, United States, Tinubu was warmly received by senior Brazilian government officials at the Brasília Air Base.
Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the president’s Adviser on Information and Strategy said in a post on his official X handle: “The Brazilian officials who welcomed Tinubu included Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Ambassador Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete, Brazil’s ambassador to Nigeria. Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, was also present at the reception.”
Other ministers, heads of key government agencies, and private sector members joined Tinubu at his hotel, where they will participate in bilateral talks and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signings.
President Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil is centered on unlocking significant economic opportunities for Nigeria.
The key focus areas include attracting multi-billion-dollar agricultural investments, advancing the $1.1 billion Green Imperative mechanization project, and securing fresh foreign direct investments (FDI) in Nigeria’s agriculture and energy sectors.
Additionally, the visit will feature high-level bilateral meetings, a Nigeria-Brazil business forum with top investors, and the signing of crucial agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening cooperation in technology, aviation, and renewable energy.
Persecondnews reports that the visit marks another milestone in the high-level engagements that have strengthened ties between Nigeria and Brazil since Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023.
Nigeria and Brazil have enjoyed longstanding diplomatic relations since the early 1960s, with Brazil being one of the first Latin American countries to participate in Nigeria’s independence celebrations in 1960.
The two nations have deepened cooperation in strategic sectors such as agriculture, defense, trade, education, and technology.
Recent agreements, including a defence cooperation pact and the establishment of a strategic dialogue mechanism, demonstrate both countries’ commitment to expanding their partnership.
During his state visit, President Tinubu will hold a private meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Planalto Palace, followed by expanded bilateral talks involving government senior officials from both countries.
The leaders will witness the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and jointly address the media afterward.
