Tragedy in Ghana: Two Ministers, Six Others Killed in Helicopter Crash

A devastating helicopter crash in Ghana’s Ashanti Region has claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and the Environment Minister, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, when a Ghana Armed Forces Z9 helicopter en route from Accra to Obuasi lost contact with radar and crashed.

The helicopter, carrying five passengers and three crew members, went down in the Adansi Akrofuom area of the Ashanti Region.

Residents who rushed to the scene found the helicopter engulfed in flames, with charred bodies visible at the crash site.

“After the crash, everything went silent. Residents who rushed to the scene found the helicopter in flames,” recounted Matthew Baah, the Assembly member for the area.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the tragic incident in a video statement, announcing that flags will fly half-mast until further notice as a mark of respect for the deceased.

The helicopter, a Z9 utility helicopter, was en route from Accra to Obuasi when it lost contact with radar and crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom area.

The victims include Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, former Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru.

Others are former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
