Sam Ahmedu, President of FIBA Africa Zone 3 and member of the FIBA Africa Executive Committee, praised Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their historic win at the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
This victory marked their fifth time winning the title, a new record.
Ahmedu specifically commended the team’s consistency and dominance in Africa.
Persecondnews had reported that the team defeated Mali 78-64 in the final match held at the Palais des Sports, Treichville, Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire.
“The Nigerian team has been consistent in their dominance of Africa due to the dedication and commitment of the players in these past years,” Ahmedu, a retired army Colonel, said.
Ahmedu noted that since defeating Angola in a third-place game in Cameroon in 2015, D’Tigress has not lost any game against African opposition, remaining unbeaten in 29 games.
“The team started slowly in a couple of games but picked themselves up on all occasions,” Ahmedu added.
“In some games, they started slowly but picked themselves up when it mattered most, finishing each game on a high note.”
Ahmedu believed that D’Tigress has set a record in Africa and will go places.
“I wish them good luck as they prepare for the FIBA Women’s World Cup,” he added.
Persecondnews reports that Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, and South Sudan will participate in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers next year.
With their record-breaking achievement, D’Tigress is poised to make a strong impression on the global stage.
