With just five days to go, the excitement is building in Abeokuta as the city prepares to host the 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championship.
The iconic MKO Abiola Stadium will welcome hundreds of athletes and officials from over 40 countries, all vying for continental glory.
The championship is expected to attract a star-studded lineup of dignitaries, including Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President, Media and Public Communication, and Engr. Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.
In a chat with our correspondent on Friday in Abuja, the Special Assistant on Media, Office of the Director General at NSC, Kola Daniel said dignitaries expected to attend the event include Chief Solomon Ogba, 2nd Vice President of the NOC, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff, General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, and Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, will also attend, highlighting the national importance of the championship.
NSC Director General Bukola Olopade also harped on the significance of the event, saying: “This championship is not just about medals; it’s about rewriting our story in African athletics. With the calibre of young talents coming in, the next Mary Onyali, Deji Aliu, Falilat Ogunkoya, or Olusoji Fasuba may just be stepping onto the track in Abeokuta.”
The championship promises to unearth the next generation of stars destined to follow in the footsteps of Nigerian athletics legends.
The event has received strong backing from NSC and its key partners, including the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Bank of Industry, LEDCO Limited, and MTN Nigeria.
