Amaju Melvin Pinnick of Nigeria is favoured to secure re-election to the FIFA Council, the highest decision-making body in international football, as voting takes place at the 14th Extraordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo, Egypt.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Communication Department in a communique on Tuesday noted that “Pinnick, a seasoned football administrator, is among 10 candidates vying for five available seats on the FIFA Council.

He faces stiff competition from Moroccan Fouzi Lekjaa and Egyptian Hany Abou Rida, among others.

However, Pinnick’s experience and reputation in African football make him a strong contender for re-election.

Persecondnews reports that the contest for the FIFA Council seats is expected to be fierce, with other notable candidates including Ivorian Yacine Idriss Diallo, Senegal’s Augustin Senghor, and Zambia’s Andrew Kamanga.

Each of the 54 CAF member associations will have the opportunity to vote for five candidates in the male category and one in the female category.

“Nigeria’s President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, who will cast Nigeria’s vote, arrived in Cairo on Sunday alongside the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi.

“The Government of Nigeria has publicly endorsed Pinnick’s candidacy, and officials, including Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Alhaji Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, are also in attendance,” the statement added.

As the elections approach, Pinnick’s re-election bid has gained momentum, with many African football stakeholders expressing confidence in his ability to represent the continent’s interests on the FIFA Council.

A victory for Pinnick would be a significant boost for Nigerian football and a testament to the country’s growing influence in African and world football.
