A potential disaster was averted when one of the tyres of a Max Air flight carrying 53 passengers burst on Tuesday night during landing at Mallam Aminu International Airport, Kano.
The incident, which occurred at 10:57pm, sent shockwaves through the airport, but fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The plane took off from Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, headed for Kano, before the incident occurred.
As of the time of this report, efforts to reach Max Air officials for comment were unsuccessful.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) were also unsuccessful, as calls and text messages to the agency’s spokesperson were not returned.
Persecondnews recalls that the latest incident occurred just 48 days after a similar scare at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where an Allied Air Cargo plane suffered a tire burst and skidded off the runway.
The Abuja incident caused significant disruptions, delaying multiple flights and prompting a temporary airport shutdown to ensure safety.
Aviation stakeholders have expressed concerns about the back-to-back incidents, saying they underscore the critical need for regular aircraft maintenance and rigorous safety checks to prevent future occurrences.
