Updated: Lagos Speaker Meranda takes the reins as Obasa’s no-show sparks uncertainty

In a surprising turn of events, Mudashiru Obasa, the recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, failed to show up at the assembly complex on Monday, despite his earlier threats to resume duties.

Meanwhile, his successor, Mojisola Meranda, made her official entrance into her new office, accompanied by assembly members in a show of solidarity, unity and support.

Persecondnews reports that this development comes after Obasa’s impeachment due to allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement.

Obasa’s absence has sparked speculation about his future plans and next course of action.

Persecondnews reported that the authorities had beefed up security at the complex in anticipation of a possible showdown by Obasa following his declaration on Saturday that he remains the speaker.

Obasa claimed that his removal was illegal, insisting that it was carried out unconstitutionally with a fake mace.

He also denied allegations of corruption, describing the alleged financial misappropriations as “impossible,” and urged lawmakers to follow the proper procedure to remove him from office.

The threat of possible disruption by Mr. Obasa prompted a significant security crackdown, with police and security officials conducting rigorous checks on journalists and other visitors attempting to enter the complex.

Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13, 2025, due to allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation, and was replaced by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda with 32 of the 40-member legislature voting.
