A one-time Senator and ex-Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, retired Gen. Jeremiah Useni, has passed away.
Aged 82, Useni had a distinguished career in public service, serving as Minister of the FCT from 1993 to 1998, Governor of Bendel State from 1984 to 1985, and Senator representing Plateau South from 2015 to 2019.
He died on Thursday during a protracted illness, according to Plateau Gov. Caleb Mutfwang, in a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere late on Thursday.
Mutfwang described Useni’s passing as a tremendous loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the nation.
He highlighted Useni’s exemplary leadership, commitment to service, and tireless efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State
The statement said:“The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, deeply regrets to announce to the citizens of Plateau State and all patriotic Nigerians, the passing of the former minister.
“Governor Mutfwang recounted the illustrious career of the late General, who served Nigeria with distinction in various capacities, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT.
“After retiring from the military, General Useni transitioned into politics, where he continued his service to the nation. He served as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).”
