The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of a female police officer, CP Betty Otimenyin to head the Edo State Command and CP Miller Dantawaye for the Kogi State Command.

Edo state has recently been in the news following a shooting during the state election petition tribunal that forced a temporary suspension of its sitting.

PSC’s spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, said on Thursday that the appointments were prompted by the impending retirement of outgoing Commissioners of Police.

He said: “The Commissioners of Police for the two states are due for retirement; CP Chukwuka Bertrand Onuoha, Commissioner of Police for Kogi, is expected to retire from service on January 22, 2025, while CP Peter Umoru will be due for retirement on January 25, 2025.

“CP Dantawaye, the new Commissioner for Kogi, was formerly AC Operations, FCT Police Command; AC Field Studies, Police Academy, Wudil Kano; Area Commander, Karewa Adamawa State Police Command and AC CID Oyo State Police Command.

“He was also AC Admin Police Special Fraud Unit, Abuja; Area Commander, Area ‘H’ Ogudu, Lagos State, DC Operations, Yobe State Police Command, Damaturu; DC Operations, Edo State Police Command, Benin and later CP Information Technology, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

“CP Betty Enekpen Otimenyin started her career in Bauchi state Command and has served as DPO in various divisions in Plateau and Edo Commands, served as Assistant Commissioner of Police Administration in Kebbi state, and Nigeria Port Authority Western Port, Lagos State, also as Area Commander in Eleme Rivers State and Mbaitoilo in Imo state.

“She was the Deputy Commissioner of Police Administration for Zone 13 Dunokuofia, Anambra State and Zone 5, Benin Edo state.

“She is Currently Commissioner of Police Administration, Force Intelligence Department FID, Abuja.”

Ani stated that retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, has urged the new commissioners to demonstrate dedication and commitment to serving their country.

He said: “DIG Argungu said they should quickly settle to their duties and ensure that they improve the state of security in the two states.

“He said the commission will continue to monitor their performance and will also encourage them to give their best.

“The approval for the appointment of the two commissioners has been conveyed to the Inspector General of Police for implementation in a letter signed by Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.”

While some are getting the required reward for their outstanding service to the force, Persecondnews recalls that the Commission on Monday January 13, approved the dismissal and prosecution of two Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) for misconduct, dishonesty, corruption and sabotage.

This was contained in a statement signed by the PSC’s spokesperson, Ani, on Monday.

The Commission also approved the reduction in ranks of six other Officers on related offences.

The Officers include two Superintendents of Police reduced to the rank of Deputy Superintendents, one Deputy Superintendent reduced to the rank of Assistant Superintendent and three Assistant Superintendents now Inspectors.

Ani stated that the Commission also approved a punishment of severe reprimand on ten senior Police Officers found guilty of unauthorised disclosure of official secret, dishonesty, sabotage and conduct unbecoming of senior Police Officers.

Also, another nine senior officers were given a punishment of reprimand.

He said a Deputy Commissioner of Police was found not guilty and was exonerated, while a letter of warning was served on an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
