The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has reacted to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent remarks expressing doubts about the operational status of the Port Harcourt Refinery.
Obasanjo, in an interview on Thursday, had alleged that Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) advised against the refinery’s viability due to corruption and claimed that the NNPCL misled Nigerians about the facility’s progress.
But in a swift response, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer (CCCO) Mr. Olufemi Soneye, invited Obasanjo to tour the rehabilitated plant, saying: “We welcome President Obasanjo to witness the transformation of the Port Harcourt Refinery.
“His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we assure him that his advice will always be welcomed and appreciated.”
Soneye emphasized that the refinery’s overhaul was not just a routine maintenance but a comprehensive transformation that meets global standards.
NNPCL has transitioned into a profit-driven energy company, shedding its government corporation roots, and the revitalization of refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna underscores the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s energy security.
Soneye reiterated NNPCL’s respect for Obasanjo, urging collaboration for the nation’s benefit.
The invitation to Obasanjo is seen as a bold move by NNPCL to showcase the progress made at the Port Harcourt Refinery and to counter the former president’s claims.
