The inaugural WAFU B U17 Girls’ Cup came to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday, with hosts Ghana emerging victorious after a penalty shootout against Nigeria.

The match, played at the Ghanaian Centre of Excellence in Prampram, outside Accra, ended 2-2 after regular time, with Ghana eventually winning 5-4 in the penalty shootout.

Ghana’s Black Maidens took an early lead, with Getrude Amoafo scoring in the 14th minute, followed by Priscilla Mensah’s goal five minutes later.

However, the Nigerian Flamingos refused to give up, with Precious Oscar scoring in the 34th minute and Harmony Chidi equalizing in the 78th minute.

The match went into a penalty shootout, where Ghana’s goalkeeper Aishatu Fatai played a crucial role.

Nigeria’s Taiwo Adegoke missed her penalty, striking the woodwork, which proved to be the decisive moment in the shootout.

Ghana scored all five of their penalties to secure the victory.

Despite the loss, the Nigerian Flamingos had an impressive tournament, scoring 16 goals in four matches and conceding only four.

Benin Republic took the bronze medals, defeating Cote d’Ivoire in a penalty shootout in the third-place match played earlier in the day.
