In a bold step towards efficient running and maintenance of secondary schools to create a conducive learning condition, Gov. Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto state has announced a monthly maintenance allowance of N200,000 for each school in the state.

Aliyu approved the monthly maintenance stipend to be paid to principals in the 23 local government areas.

The governor, who disclosed this during the Sokoto State 2025 Citizens Budget interactive session, said the gesture was aimed at ensuring the delivery of quality education in a conducive environment.

A former state Deputy Governor, Mr. Chiso Abdullahi, had at the forum urged Gov. Allyu to approve some funds to assist principals in repairing some damages in schools.

Abdullahi told the governor that this would enable the principals to fix the damages without having to wait for a long period of approval from the government due to bureaucratic delays.

He said with the funds, schools could hire their own carpenters and bricklayers, among others, to carry out some repairs.

According to the Chief Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, the governor has approved January 2025 as the commencement date for the release of the funds.

“Let me inform this gathering that the governor, in his usual manner, asked me to inform the general public that in line with the appeal made by the former deputy governor, he has agreed to give each school principal a sum of two hundred thousand naira monthly,” he announced.
