The Department of State Services (DSS) in Ogun State has arrested the 2023 governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ladi Adebutu.
Adebutu’s arrest is not unconnected with the November 16 local government election in the state that was marred by violence in some areas.
He was alleged to have brought some policemen from Lagos on the day of the election to disrupt the exercise.
Confirming his arrest, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kayode Adebayo, said he was detained for charges yet unknown.
Adebayo noted that efforts to secure his bail proved abortive as of about 10 pm on Monday.
”The leader of the Peoples Democratic Party has truly been detained by the DSS for charges yet unknown.
“Several efforts have been made to secure his bail as of 10 pm on Monday, 18th November, 2024, either on personal recognition or by a surety, but none has yielded any result so far; his lawyers have been informed, and they will take it up by tomorrow (Tuesday) morning,” he said.
He, however, urged the public and supporters of the party to remain calm while the matter is being resolved.
“However, our principal (Adebutu) has called for calm and directed that all members of the party, supporters, and well-wishers should be reassured that this time shall pass; it is one of the prices for our democracy,” Adebayo also said.
