Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has praised Edo Queens’ remarkable fighting spirit after their 2-1 victory over defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Edo Queens’ triumph on Saturday night propelled them to the semifinals of the competition, leaving Gusau and the Nigerian football family ecstatic.
“The NFF and the Nigeria football family are very happy at the accomplishments of Edo Queens… We congratulate the Edo State Government and all those involved in this remarkable progress,” Gusau said.
The Nigerian champions’ journey to the semifinals has been impressive, having won the WAFU B Women’s Champions League title in Cote d’Ivoire.
Edo Queens demonstrated resilience and determination against Sundowns, coming from behind to secure a stunning victory.
Sundowns took the lead in the 24th minute through Melinda Kgadiete, but Edo Queens equalized in added time, courtesy of Emem Essien’s tenacity.
Mary Mamudu sealed the win five minutes later, capitalizing on Goodness Osigwe’s pass.
Gusau believed Edo Queens have the capacity to win the title, citing their Nigerian spirit and inspired performance.
“Their victory over the Cup holders is a statement in resilience, determination, and ambition,” he added.
Edo Queens will face TP Mazembe of DR Congo in the semifinals on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Morocco time.
The Nigerian champions previously defeated Commercial Bank of Ethiopia 3-0 and drew 0-0 with Masar FC of Egypt.
As Edo Queens aim for the title, Gusau’s praise reflects the nation’s pride in their achievements.
