Just in: Lawyers withdraw from Abuja Bolt driver’s assault case after apology

Lawyers representing Stephen Abuwatseye, the Abuja Bolt driver allegedly assaulted by House of Representatives member, Mr. Alex Ikwechegh from Abia State, have withdrawn from the case.

Deji Adeyanju and Partners announced their withdrawal from representing Abuwatseya, citing the need to safeguard their professional integrity and uphold the highest ethical standards in the legal profession.

The House of Representatives member from Aba North/South of Abia State recently assaulted Abuwatseya while he was delivering a package.

Persecondnews reported that an altercation had ensued between Abuwatseya and Ikwechegh at the lawmaker’s residence in Maitama, Abuja.

Following the incident, Ikwechegh was arraigned at the Kuje Magistrate’s Court in Abuja and was granted bail of N500,000 with two sureties.

In a surprising turn of events, Abuwatseya apologized to Ikwechegh on Thursday, calling for unity among Nigerians.

Reacting, a statement by the law firm signed by Zainab Ortega reads: “We wish to formally announce the withdrawal of our legal representation in the case involving the alleged assault of Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye.

“On October 28, 2024, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye walked into our law firm, visibly distressed, and sought redress over an alleged assault.

“Following his complaint and having verified his claim, we took steps to protect Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye’s rights on a ‘pro bono’ basis, culminating in the arraignment of the alleged assaulter.

“However, in view of recent developments and after careful consideration, we have made the decision to withdraw our legal representation in order to protect our professional integrity and maintain the highest ethical standard in the legal profession.

“We wish Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye the very best, while we assure the general public of our continuous commitment towards protecting the rights of the oppressed and indigent members of society.”
