Jigawa tanker fire: Death toll rises to 147

The death toll from the tanker explosion in Majia in the Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has risen to 147.

Mr. Shuaibu Hambali, the Taura Local Government Chairman confirmed the fatalities to newsmen on Wednesday, saying an additional 72 people sustained varying degrees of injuries and are in the various hospitals.

Reacting to the tragic incident, Kano Governor Abba Yusuf expressed his condolences to the government and people of Jigawa State.

As at Wednesday afternoon, over 104 lives were lost and more than 70 people had serious burns.

A statement from the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, described the incident as a heart-wrenching tragedy, representing a significant loss not only for Jigawa State but for the nation as a whole.

“We received with deep shock the news of the devastating fire in Majia town, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State, which resulted in the loss of many lives and the hospitalization of numerous victims.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Kano State, I extend our deepest sympathies to Governor Umar Namadi, the government and people of Jigawa State, especially to the families of the deceased and the community of Majia,” the statement said.

“May Allah SWT grant eternal peace to the souls of the departed, provide a speedy recovery to those injured, and may we never witness such a catastrophe again.”
