Flooding: Pres. Tinubu creates disaster relief fund

1.5k

President Bola Tinubu has established a disaster relief fund to address the devastating impact of flooding in the country, particularly in Borno State.

This move follows the recent flooding in Maiduguri that displaced 400,000 people and claimed 100 lives.

Persecondnews recalls that Tinubu, during a visit to Borno State, announced the relief fund, emphasizing the need for specialized funding to tackle the emerging demands and challenges posed by climate change.

He urged the private sector to contribute to the fund, acknowledging that the climate’s unpredictability requires collective action.

The president’s directive was given during the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday, September 23.

Mr. Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, explained that disasters like the Maiduguri flooding will likely become more frequent due to climate change, necessitating a proactive approach.

Tinubu also paid homage to the Shehu of Borno, an internally displaced persons camp, and a drive-through of the affected areas.

He commended Governor Babagana Zulum’s prompt intervention and the military’s evacuation efforts, which saved many lives.

The disaster relief fund will provide critical support to Nigerian citizens impacted by floods and other disasters.

The National Assembly has pledged its collaboration with the executive to establish the fund, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio reaffirming the legislative body’s commitment.

This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by climate change and providing support to affected communities.
