Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, on Monday addressed the 79th United Nations General Assembly, highlighting Nigeria’s longstanding dedication and commitment to international peace and security.

Since its first deployment in the Congo in 1960, Nigeria has contributed significantly to global peacekeeping efforts, participating in 41 peacekeeping missions worldwide with over 200,000 Nigerian troops serving in UN operations, he recalled.

Badaru noted the need for reforming the UN Security Council to ensure Africa has permanent representation, which would enhance global stability and promote inclusivity.

“To achieve lasting peace, it is essential that Africa has a strong voice in the UN Security Council.

“We call for reforms to give Africa permanent representation, ensuring our continent plays a vital role in shaping global security policies.”

The Minister also highlighted the importance of building professional African armies to combat terrorism effectively.

He emphasized the need for operationalizing the African Standby Force, a critical component in the continent’s peace and security architecture.

In addition, Badaru addressed the growing concern of transnational organized crime, particularly the alarming trend of kidnappings for ransom and acts of piracy.

He urged the international community to scale up efforts in addressing these issues through comprehensive strategies, including prevention, early detection, protection, and law enforcement.

Badaru cautioned about the dangers of unchecked small arms and light weapons proliferation in conflict zones, particularly in the Sahel region.

He called on the international community to renew efforts to stem the tide of illicit arms, which exacerbate insecurity and instability.

“Nigeria remains committed to supporting UN efforts in combating terrorism and promoting global peace,” Badaru concluded. “We will continue to work tirelessly with international partners to ensure a safer, more secure world for all.”
