Unleashing of wild dogs on police: 2 people remanded in prison, face life imprisonment

1.2k

For allegedly unleashing four wild dogs on police to obstruct the arrest of a suspect, two people, including a woman, are now cooling their heels in prison in Oyo State.

A woman, Olayinka Akinware, 35, and Tunji Adesina, 29, were remanded in the Abolongo Correctional Facility in Oyo on the orders of an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ibadan on Thursday.

Persecondnews reports that they will remain behind bars until Dec. 18, 2024.

The Magistrate, Mr. M. Mudashiru, did not take the defendants’ plea for lack of jurisdiction.

He said they are to remain in custody pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Earlier, Prosecutor Femi Oluwadare, a police inspector, told the court that the defendants were charged with conspiracy and prevention of arrest.

Oluwadare alleged that the duo conspired to prevent the arrest of a suspect who lived in their house.

According to him, on Sept. 12, at about 8:30 a.m., the defendants assaulted DSP Festus Fagbohun, ASP Ojo Tolulope, Insp. Sariki Mohammed, and Cpl. Tosin Olubode with branches of a bamboo tree.

”Akinware and Adesina unleashed their Pitbull, Rottweiler, and two Eskimo dogs on the police in an attempt to prevent the lawful arrest of Korede Adeoye while performing their duty,” Oluwadare said.

He said the defendants committed the offences at No. 15, Oluwo, in Ibadan.

The offences contravened Sections 332 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State 2000.

If convicted, the offenders face life imprisonment according to Section 332 of the Criminal Code.

The case was adjourned until Dec. 18, 2024.
