WAEC withholds results of 215,267 candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it has withheld the results of 215,267 candidates, accounting for 11.92% of the total 1,805,216 students who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, pending further review or investigation.

Persecondnews recalls that the 2024 WASSCE commenced on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, and concluded on June 24, 2024.

The Head of the Nigeria WAEC Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, announced the release of the 2024 WASSCE results on Monday but withheld the results of 215,267 candidates pending further investigation into reported cases of examination irregularities and malpractices.

Dangut noted a 4.37% decrease in examination malpractice cases, from 16.29% in 2023 to 11.92% in 2024, and emphasized that WAEC remains committed to taking stern action against all forms of malpractice.

He warned that any individual or institution involved in such unethical practices, including schools, supervisors, teachers, and candidates, would face consequences for compromising the integrity of the educational system.

He said: “The increasing use of mobile phones in the examination hall, despite the existing ban, and organised cheating in some schools are other nagging issues.

“All the cases are being investigated, and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council for consideration and final decisions.

“The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their various schools in due course.

“Candidates affected by these decisions can now seek redress for their malpractice cases via our website if they so wish. All hands must, therefore, be on deck to sanitise the system.”

According to Dangut, a significant 73.79% of candidates, totalling 1,332,089 out of 1,805,216, achieved credits or higher in at least five subjects, including or excluding English language and/or Mathematics.

This marks a notable accomplishment in the 2024 WASSCE results.

He said: “As WASSCE for school candidates 2024 results are being uploaded on the results website, candidates should, after checking their results online, apply for their digital certificates, which will be released 48 hours thereafter.

“Candidates who have fulfilled their financial obligations to the Council can access their results on the Council’s results website within the next 12 hours. Copies of the result listing will be sent to schools shortly.”

The 2024 WASSCE examination was administered across four West African countries, namely Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
