FG cautions Nigerians in UK against movements amid ongoing violence

The Federal Government has warned Nigerian citizens in the UK to exercise caution due to the increased violence and unrest sparked by recent riots.

Ambassador Eche Abu-Ode, the spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued the travel alert on Monday.

Violent protests swept across Britain’s towns and cities following a deadly knife attack at a children’s dance class in Southport, northwest England, which left three girls dead and 10 others injured last Monday, according to Reuters.

The tragedy was exploited by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim groups, which falsely claimed that the suspected attacker was an immigrant and a radical Islamist.

However, police clarified that the suspect was born in Britain and emphasized that the incident is not being treated as a terrorist attack, contrary to the misinformation being spread.

Following the development, the government advised citizens to avoid political processions, protests, rallies, and marches.

They should also steer clear of crowded areas and large gatherings, remaining vigilant and self-aware at all times.

The statement reads in part: “There is an increased risk of violence and disorder occasioned by the recent riots in the UK, stemming from the killing of three young girls at a concert.

“The violence has assumed dangerous proportions, as evidenced by reported attacks on law enforcement agents and damage to infrastructure.

“To this end, citizens are advised to be extra vigilant and take measures as follows: avoid political processions and protests, rallies, or marches. Avoid crowded areas and large gatherings. Be vigilant and self-aware at all times.”

Citizens are advised to reach out to the Nigerian High Commission in the UK for further information and assistance. They can be contacted via email at hc@nigeriahc.org.uk or by phone at +442078391244.
