Cheering news has hit Nigeria from the ongoing Olympics in Paris, France, as Blessing Oborududu qualified for the women’s wrestling 68 kg quarterfinal after defeating Canada’s Linda Morais at the Champ-de-Mars Arena on Monday.
Despite her sluggish start, conceding two points in the first three minutes of the bout, the 35-year-old bounced back stronger in the second half to score six consecutive points, going on to win the match 8-2 on points.
Oborududu is hoping to improve her own record at the games, having previously won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
She was one of Team Nigeria’s two medallists from the COVID-19-ridden Games.
Her victory made her the first Nigerian to win a medal in wrestling at the Olympic Games.
