Amid rising discontent over the current hardship in Nigeria, prominent actress and activist Tonto Dikeh appears to be reconsidering her involvement in the planned nationwide protest set to take place on August 1.
The protest, tagged “End Bad Government in Nigeria 2024,” aims to register the frustration and discomfort of youths across the nation.
In a statement reflecting on her perspective on the protest, Dikeh expressed her deep understanding of the public’s frustrations.
“I completely understand your frustrations and concerns regarding the current state of our nation,” she said.
“I know how disheartening it is to wake up and see that the price of almost everything in the market has increased by over 100 percent, even without any rise in our earnings.”
Highlighting the economic hardships faced by many Nigerians, Dikeh pointed out that individuals working regular 9–5 jobs are increasingly seeking alternative sources of income.
“A significant portion of what we earn is consumed by commuting and transportation costs due to the drastic increase in petrol prices, contributing to the high cost of living,” she noted.
Despite her empathy for the cause, Dikeh raised concerns about the planned protest, drawing on past experiences to caution against potential pitfalls.
“I still believe that the approach of a nationwide protest from August 1–10, 2024, may not be the most effective method at this time,” she remarked.
Her apprehension is rooted in the aftermath of the EndSARS protest, which was marred by violence and hijacked by individuals with malicious intent, undermining the initial message and goals.
As an alternative, Dikeh proposed the formation of a representative group to advocate on behalf of the populace.
This group could formally engage with President Bola Tinubu, seeking a meeting to voice concerns and propose actionable solutions.
“Engaging in meaningful dialogue, advocacy, and community development initiatives can foster unity, progress, and prosperity,” she advised.
Dikeh’s statement underscores her commitment to peaceful and diplomatic channels for effecting change.
“This economic burden affects us all, and it is essential to address these challenges through peaceful and diplomatic channels,” she emphasized.
She called for unity and constructive efforts to build a better Nigeria, encouraging youths to consider alternative ways to make their voices heard and work towards a brighter future.
