A bill aimed at introducing a single six-year term for the President, state governors, and local government chairmen is now before the House of Representatives.

Persecondnews reports that a group of over 30 lawmakers known as the Reformed Minded Lawmakers is sponsoring the bill, which also calls for the holding of all elections, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) election, on the same day.

The group’s leader, Mr. Ikenga Ugochinyere, stated at a press conference on Monday at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja that the proposed bill also includes provisions for the rotation of the presidency among the country’s six geopolitical zones.

Additionally, the bill suggests two vice presidents with a succession plan in place, whereby one vice president would assume the role of acting president if the president dies in office while the other vice president would take over as vice president to maintain the balance of power.

The proposed legislation, according to the lawmakers, also includes provisions that require the resolution of all pre-election disputes in court at least 30 days before the election date.

Furthermore, the bills require the resolution of all election-related cases prior to the swearing-in of elected officials.

Additionally, the bills propose a seven-year prison term for any electoral officer or officers who intentionally announce election results that contradict the actual votes cast by the people.

The lawmakers urged Nigerians to support these bills, which they believe will bring about the good governance that citizens have long been craving.

The lawmakers emphasized the imperativeness of creating a more transparent and accountable political system in the country that truly serves the people’s interests.
