Nollywood mourns loss of iconic actor Amaechi Muonagor at 61

Muonagor, a revered figure in the Nigerian entertainment scene, succumbed to complications arising from kidney-related issues, diabetes, and a stroke in the early hours of Sunday.

The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, has been thrown into grief as news broke of the passing of veteran actor Amaechi Muonagor at the age of 61.

Muonagor, a revered figure in the Nigerian entertainment scene, succumbed to complications arising from kidney-related issues, diabetes, and a stroke in the early hours of Sunday.

Per Second News reports that his health struggles became apparent in 2023 when he suffered a stroke, resulting in partial paralysis of his left leg.

Since then, he has been undergoing intensive medical care, including weekly dialysis and physiotherapy, to address the debilitating effects of the stroke.

Tragically, Muonagor’s demise comes just days after he made a heartfelt plea on social media for financial assistance to fund a kidney transplant.

Life and times

The late actor’s contributions to Nollywood are immeasurable, having graced screens in numerous Nigerian movies throughout his illustrious career.

He gained widespread recognition for his memorable portrayal of the father figure in the popular film “Aki and Paw Paw,” where he endeared himself to audiences as the patriarch of two mischievous young boys.

His wife, Hope Chikodi Muonagor, and their children survive Amaechi Muonagor.

Fans and colleagues alike will deeply miss him, as his passing leaves a profound void in the Nigerian film industry.

As tributes pour in from across the entertainment world, Muonagor’s legacy as a talented actor and beloved personality will undoubtedly endure, serving as an inspiration for future generations of Nigerian filmmakers and performers.

Thespians mourn

No fewer than 15 colleagues of Muonagor mourned his passing on Sunday evening across social media platforms.

Some of them who took to their personal pages said his death was a big loss to the movie industry and entertainment industry in Africa, as there are not many in the league of the veteran actor.
