Aftermath of the President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero’s meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday afternoon amid workers’ nationwide protests, he has indicated that the president has “made some commitments” to labour.

The subsidy issue has triggered hardships including increase in prices of food, goods and services across the states.

Ajaero also could not state if the protest will be called off immediately after emerging from the meeting with the President along with the TUC President, Festus Osifo.

“We met with the President). The issues are the same issues that led to the protest today.

“He has expressed his position, made some commitments which are taken side by side with what the National Assembly, the Senate said.

“We are taking it back to the office with our colleagues to review it and release a document on our next line of action,” the NLC leader said, describing
their discussion regarding subsidy removal palliatives as fruitful and productive.

Speaking with State House correspondents, Ajaero noted that labour and the president “examined the proposed measures thoroughly”.

Answering reporters’ questions on when the strike will be called off, he said it is a decision that will taken at the union’s executive committee meeting on Wednesday night.

“No one person can call it off and that is why I say we will have to go back to the office so that we will look at it at the EXCO before they come up with a decision.

“By tomorrow, we will look at the bigger picture on whether to suspend the protest. The President is a pro-democratic activist so he understands protests,” he said.

Persecondnews recalls that Labour had described as not “far reaching enough” the palliatives announced by Tinubu in a nationwide broadcast on Monday, July 31.

Ajaero said the President explained certain things hitherto not contained in the broadcast.
