President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday at the Council Chambers swore in the Police Service Commission’s Chairman, ex-Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase.

Persecondnews reports that Arase took the oath just before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Arase, 65, who retired in 2016, took his oath of office at 10:05am with Vice-President Yemi Osibanjo (SAN), Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha and the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari and other council members attending the brief ceremony.

Arase takes over from the former Chairman, ex-IGP Musiliu Smith who resigned in September 2022.

Persecondnews reported that on January 20, 2023 President Buhari had forwarded the name of Arase to the Senate for consideration in a letter addressed to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

Buhari wrote:“I write to forward, for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Solomo Arase, (Rtd. IGP) as Chairman, Police Service Commission. The nominee’s CV is hereby attached.

“It is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the appointment in the usual expeditious manner.

“Please accept, Distinguished Senate President the assurances of my highest consideration.”

Also at the occasion, the President also swore in five board members of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

The members included Murtala Kankia from Katsina (North-West); Zephaniah Bulus from Nasarawa (North Central) and Farouk Umar from Yobe (North East).

Others are Taofik Abdulsalam from Ondo (South West) and Prof. Juwaria Badamasi from Kogi State (North Central).

Persecondnews recalls that the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, led by the South-South leader, nonagenarian Chief Edwin Clark had hailed President Buhari over the appointment of Arase.

In a statement, PANDEF’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Ken Robinson, said the bidy was particularly delighted that “Buhari in this instance recognized and rewarded competence, patriotism, and love for the nation which are the virtues that the former Inspector-General of Police boldly upholds and bespeaks.”

“The Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari on the appointment of a former Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Dr. Solomon Arase, as Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

“PANDEF said it is particularly impressed that Mr. President, in this instance, recognized and rewarded competence, patriotism, and love for the nation: virtues which the former Inspector-General of Police boldly upholds and bespeaks.

“PANDEF also lauded the Nigerian Senate for its speedy confirmation of Solomon Arase’s nomination as Chairman of PSC.

“Noting that the appointment of Solomon Arase is coming at a time when equipoise was needed in the nation’s polity,” the organization said.
