Ignoring warning from Kano Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Kano State yesterday was marred by violent protest by youths as his convoy was pelted with stones.
Buhari had landed in Kano on Monday to inaugurate some projects built by the state government and the Federal Government.
Persecondnews reported that Ganduje had earlier told the president to shelve his visit to the state, citing security reasons that there might be “unforseen situations” over old Naira notes swap deadline and difficulty in getting the new notes in the banks.
The governor later “cleared” the president that he could continue with the visit after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) extended the swapping of old notes with new notes.
On Monday, as soon as the president arrived the youths started hurling stones and other pebbles at the helicopter conveying the president to Kano city shortly before it landed.
Trending video online saw the youths hauling stones at the Chopper in the sky despite the heavy presence of security.
Security agents had a hectic time clearing the youths on the way to Ahmadu Bello Way where the president was scheduled to inaugurate some projects.
Buhari later flew his Chopper to the Emir’s palace, where he paid homage to Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero before driving in a convoy to commission Galaxy Backbone Ltd Project.
Minor skirmishes with the youths were reported as they were hurling stones of various sizes from a distance to avoid being apprehended by heavily armed security operatives guarding the President.
