In an unusual political twist, former President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday threw his weight behind the candidacy of Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Delta Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of the People’s Democratic Party in the 2023 poll.
Receiving a PDP delegation led by Okowa and Bauchi Gov. Bala Mohammed in Abuja, Jonathan said he was “willing and ready” to support and work for the success of the PDP in 2023.
Persecondnews reports that Jonathan, a former PDP president (2009-2015) called Okowa as Nigeria’s incoming Vice-President in a video that has gone viral on the social media.
Jonathan while raising Okowa’s hand, referred to him as “our incoming Vice President.”
“I wish the party members success in all their endeavours “especially those who want to represent us from next year (2023).”
Speaking earlier, Okowa said it was imperative to seek the support and blessings of President Jonathan as the party was poised for victory in February 2023.
Persecondnews recalls that Jonathan was speculated to have quit the PDP after he lost the 2015 presidential election to the then of APC and incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.
Some PDP governors in the North and Senate President Bukola Saraki as well as some chieftains ditched Jonathan which he described as betrayal and conspiracy.
Jonathan had since distanced himself from the party and its conventions and the June 2022 presidential primary election held in Abuja which produced ex-Vice-Presidential Atiku Abubakar as the flagbearer for the 2023 poll.
