A lawyer and an official of Oyo State Council are facing trial at an Igbosere High Court on Lagos Island for allegedly stealing N167.8 million from the estate of the late Godfrey Kwashie Konu.
The duo had allegedly forged a letter of attestation of marriage certificate purportedly issued from Ibadan South-East Local Government of Oyo State and a letter captioned ‘Marriage Certificate’ issued from a Magistrate Court in Ibadan.
The accused — a lawyer, Ibukunoluwa Konu, 44, and Badmus Adesina, 59, an Oyo State Council official – conspired with the intent to defraud without lawful authority or excuse made, signed and executed the forged letter of attestation, according to the prosecution.
They are standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, forgery and making documents without authority between 2009 and 2019.
Only Ibukunoluwa Konu was present in court when the accused were arraigned.
Counsel to the lawyer, Mr O. Agboola, however, pleaded with the court that Adesina, who lives in Ibadan, was unable to attend the court because of the current COVID-19 interstate travel ban.
Police Prosecutor Williams Tijani of the Force Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (FCIID), Alagbon, Ikoyi, alleged that the duo stole N167.8 million from the Estate of the late Godfrey Kwashie Konu.
The offences contravened Sections 280, 287, 363, 365, 370 and 411 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
Owing to the lawyer’s absence in court, Justice O. Ogunjobi, fixed July 28, 2020 for the arraignment of the duo.
He said the adjournment was in keeping with the COVID-19 regulations of the Lagos State Judiciary.
