Reality TV star and actress, Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has described October 2 as a date that will forever remain special in her life following her victory in the Big Brother Naija Reality Show and her latest triumph in the boxing ring.
Phyna emerged winner of the 7th season of Big Brother Naija on October 2, 2022, defeating other finalists to claim the coveted prize and announce herself as one of the reality show’s most prominent winners.
Four years after that victory, the reality star has again marked the date with another milestone, this time in the boxing ring, where she defeated actress Nkechi Blessing in a celebrity boxing bout held in Lagos early hours Friday.
Reflecting on the coincidence of the two victories, Phyna said October 2 had now taken on an even greater significance in her life.
“October 2nd will forever be a special date in my life. Today marks the anniversary of the day I won BBN, and now, years later, I’m celebrating another historic victory,” she said.
According to Phyna, her latest achievement also marked a significant moment for women in the sport, describing herself as the first female boxer to step into the particular ring and emerge victorious.
She said the boxing bout represented another opportunity for her to challenge herself beyond the identity that came with winning Big Brother Naija.
“From reality TV to the boxing ring, I’ve always been willing to challenge myself, break barriers and prove that there is so much more to Phyna than what people see,” she said.
The reality star also dedicated the victory to women who have faced limitations or been told they could not achieve certain goals.
“This one is for every woman who has ever been told she couldn’t. We can. We will. And we absolutely should,” Phyna said.
“A huge thank you to Balmoral Promotions and Bet9ja for giving me this incredible opportunity to step into a new chapter and make history,” she added.
