Just In: Another Enugu Building Collapse Leaves Six Family Members Dead

Heavy rains and landslides in Enugu State’s Awgu Local Government Area caused a fatal building collapse on September 18, claiming the lives of six family members in Nenwenta community.

The victims—a couple, their three children, and a grandmother—died when an overhead water tank caved in on their home.

A four-year-old child survived and is receiving hospital treatment.

The disaster has isolated Nenwenta and nearby Ugwueme from the rest of the state, crippling emergency response operations and forcing travelers to reroute through Abia and Imo states to reach other areas of Enugu.

Mr. Anthony Nwankwo, representing Awgu South State Constituency, confirmed the tragedy on the floor of the Enugu State House of Assembly on Monday during a motion of urgent public importance.

Presenting a grim report on the disaster, Nwankwo stated that six members of one family were killed when an overhead water tank collapsed on their home, leaving a four-year-old child as the sole survivor.

He lamented that the victims might have been saved had blocked access routes not hindered emergency responders from reaching the community in time.

“I move that the House do write the relevant authorities to intervene to open the road leading to Ugwueme and Nenwenta,” Nwankwo said.

The lawmaker appealed to the Enugu State Ministry of Works, Enugu State Emergency Management Authority and the Ecological Fund to urgently intervene, reopen the road and prevent further loss of life and property.

Contributing to the motion, lawmakers sympathised with Nwankwo and residents of his constituency, while supporting immediate intervention to restore access to the affected communities.

Joining the call, lawmakers Chima Obieze, Okey Mba, and Osita Eze labeled the event a natural disaster and cautioned against hazardous hillside construction and soil excavation.

They pressed the government to swiftly clear blocked transit routes and deliver immediate humanitarian aid to Ugwueme and Nenwenta residents.
