Stakeholders Urge Energy Boss Mustapha Abdullahi to Lead NBBF Restructure

As Nigerian basketball approaches its October 2026 Congress and presidential election, stakeholders are calling on Energy Commission Director-General Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi to step forward and revitalize the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).

Frustrated by years of recycled strategies and stagnant results, the basketball community is seeking visionary leadership capable of elevating the sport to global competitiveness.

Advocates point to the recent transformation in Nigerian volleyball as a blueprint for success.

Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi has demonstrated how institutional backing can revolutionize a national federation through dedicated league sponsorship, upgraded infrastructure, enhanced player welfare, and targeted coaching development.

Under Adeniyi’s stewardship, the Customs women’s volleyball team achieved a historic milestone by completing an unbeaten Premier League season to retain their title, while the men’s team surged from a sixth-place standing to finish second nationwide.

Supporters believe Dr. Abdullahi possesses the governance experience and institutional leverage required to replicate this winning model within basketball federation

The Service has bankrolled the CGC Volleyball Premier League, upgraded subsidies, recruited foreign players and revived inter-zonal games, showing how a federal agency head can reshape a sport.

Former Plateau Peaks player Etudaiye Hassan called for a fresh start for Nigerian basketball, pointing to Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi’s track record as proof of his capability.

Hassan noted that the DAM Foundation Championship—staged every December in Okene, Kogi State—demonstrates Abdullahi’s ability to build sustainable platforms and drive meaningful development in the sport.

“The tournament has given players competition, exposure and opportunity, signalling a leader who invests ideas, money and energy rather than merely talking development.”

Advocates emphasize Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi’s approachable leadership style, arguing that an NBBF president must treat the welfare of players, coaches, officials, and staff as a priority rather than an afterthought.

His track record leading the Energy Commission and managing the DAM Championship reflects a people-first ethos—demonstrated through direct support to the basketball community and efforts to secure federal civil service jobs for its members.

Supporters argue this approach recognizes that a strong federation must build sustainable, dignified livelihoods for its people, not just field competitive teams.

Former player Etudaiye Hassan warned that Nigerian basketball cannot continue repeating old habits while expecting new results, stressing that raw talent alone is insufficient to build a world-class system.

The federation requires fresh strategy across grassroots development, tournament structures, commercialization, infrastructure, and international engagement.

Leveraging his global exposure and institutional experience, supporters believe Abdullahi can import proven international models to modernize the NBBF and move it beyond its traditional operations.
